About Cyprus
Cyprus is the third largest Mediterranean island and one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting over 2.4 million tourists per year. A former British colony, it became an independent republic in 1960 and a member of the Commonwealth in 1961. The Republic of Cyprus is one of the advanced economies in the region, and has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. It adopted the euro on 1 January 2008.
The Cypriot economy is prosperous and has diversified in recent years. Cyprus has been sought as a base for several affshore businesses for its highly developed infrastucture. Economic policy policy of the Cyprus government has focused on meeting the criteria for admission to the European Union. Adaption of the euro as a national currency is reguired of all new countries joining the European Union, and the Cypriot government adopted the currency on 1 January 2008.
Climate - Excellent weather with more than 340 days of sunshine. The hottest months are from June through to September with average temperatures of 32c, the swimming season practically starts from April and doesn’t end until November, where you will see temperatures more like a warm summer’s day in the UK. Even the winter months of December to February you can walk round in a t-shirt with average temperatures of 17-19c what more could you ask for! Many foreign residents actually prefer their Cyprus homes in the low season months, when tourists disappear, and the climate is still warm enough to enjoy fully all the advantages of living in the country or on the coast.
Cost of living - The relatively low cost of living in Cyprus has an added appeal for the potential buyer, offering a full, but comparatively inexpensive lifestile.The cost of basic essentials such as food, drink and clothing is noticeably lower in Cyprus than in the U.K. It is in fact the cheapest in the entire Mediterranean region with locally produced meat, fruit, vegetables, milk and staple produce selling for dramatically low prices!
Crime Rate - Cyprus enjoys a remarkably low crime rate, 1/6 of the European average. In Cyprus it doesn’t matter if you don’t lock your house or car your neighbours will keep an eye on your property for you, children can walk to school unaccompanied and drug and alcohol related misdemeanours are practically unheard of.
